Tontine Lane, Glasgow
The Empire Sign which was originally located on the rear wall of a bank in Brunswick Lane, now hangs high on the side of a tall building in the heart of the Merchant City.
The single, bright green, slightly flickering neon sign bearing the word “EMPIRE”, projects from the wall like the sign for a cinema. But there are some quirks to this otherwise ordinary looking urban sign. The letters of the word EMPIRE are reversed. The word can only be read the correct way round if the viewer is standing at an angle which allows them to see the sign reflected in the dark mirror on the wall.
This is the only public work on display in Glasgow of Glasgow born artist Douglas Gordon
